Your Thermostat should be located in a central location in your house that is not effected by external elements. So it will usually be in a hallway or a central room. The Thermostat also should be in a area that it is not impacted by sunlight because the radiant sunlight will cause your thermostat to read incorrectly.
You could also see it where there is a remote sensor wired up to the thermostat. So in cases where you don't want the stat visible you can put it is a closet and run a sensor to the common area that you want to control. This is not as common but you can see it when maybe you only have 2 wires running to the location that you are controlling with the Thermostat and you need at least 5 wire in most case to use a Thermostat for control of your Air Handler. In this case you could install the Thermostat next to the Air handler and install a remote sensor for control.
