Will a Thermostat Work Without Batteries?

Updated: Apr 18

A Thermostat can work without batteries if you have AC power hooked up. There are 2 wires that you need to have in order to make sure that the Thermostat will continue working with no batteries. There is a R terminal which is your 24VAC Hot and a C terminal which is your 24VAC Com. If these are landed you do not need to have the batteries installed for you Air Handler to work. If you take a look at the picture below you will see a RED wire on RH this is your 24vac (+). You may also notice that there is no wire landed on C. C is the 24vac (-) and you will need to have a wire landed (usually black) for your thermostat to work without batteries. There will also be a C in your HVAC Unit.

The Sensi thermostat (below) does not use batteries at all if you are interested in a smart thermostat.

You can install remote wireless sensors and pick the temperature in any room in the house. You can use the app to control it when you are not home and also check usage of you HVAC equipment to see how much your unit is running. This is helpful when trying to safe energy.
